Electronics Disposal
By Amy | May 5, 2008
What do you do when you’ve got old electronic equipment that you’d like to dispose of? Putting these items in the trash is definitely not a good idea, as electronics components are notoriously bad for the environment. BBB Advice on Disposing of Computers Safely and Securely also states the following:
Simply tossing a computer out with the trash is a bad idea for two reasons. Not only does a computer store personal and financial information that a consumer wouldn’t want getting into the hands of ID thieves, but it is also composed of heavy metals and toxins that are extremely hazardous to the environment. In fact, in some states, an individual runs the risk of fines or even jail time for improperly disposing of a computer.
So what other options are there? In Vanderburgh County, Solid Waste Management has an upcoming Electronics Recycling Day, which may be exactly what you’re looking for. On Saturday May 10, from 8am - 12pm, Vanderburgh County residents can bring their unwanted electronics to the Civic Center parking lot (Ninth & Walnut Evansville, Indiana 47708) for recycling. Accepted electronics include the following:
Computers
Monitors
Printers
Keyboards
Modems
Scanners
Fax machines
TVs
VCRs
DVD/CD players
Tape/cassette players
Stereos
This event is open to Vanderburgh County residents only–no businesses please.
Recycling your less dated electronics is not the only possible solution — we’ve done a previous post called Recycling Cell Phones and Computers, which provides useful information and resources for those of you interested in donating your computers and cell phones to charitable causes.
