Identity Protection on Social Networking Sites

By Amy | July 7, 2008

networking.jpgSocial networking on the web is nothing new, and the fact that there are over 100 major (widely used) social networking sites on the net it testament to that. These social networking sites have been under worldwide fire for a while now, because of the amount of personal information their users provide on their profiles, making them easy targets for identity theft–and worse.

NextAdvisor.com has put together two resources addressing these concerns for users of two of the most popular social networking sites in the US, but some of the basic ideas can easily translate for use on any social networking site.

The MySpace Identity Theft Protection Guide and the Facebook Identity Theft Protection Guide are both easily read online and definitely worth looking over if you or someone you know is a regular on those (or any) social networking sites.

For parents concerned about the activities of their children, tweens and teens, the FTC has published How to Protect Kids’ Privacy Online and Social Networking Sites: Safety Tips for Tweens and Teens .
