Beware of Tax Relief Fraud This Tax Season

debtIts tax time and there are those who want to take advantage of consumers who are searching for relief from tax debts. On February 5th, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) issued a press release citing actions taken against American Tax Relief (ATR) and its owners.  According to the FTC, the owners of ATR allegedly received more than $100 million dollars from consumers by “falsely claiming they could reduce their tax debts.”  The courts are currently pursuing $15 million in assets from the owners however if it is determined that they misrepresented their financial circumstances the entire settlement of $103.3 million will become due according to the press release. Please see the FTC press release and the BBB review for American Tax Relief.

If you are in need of help in paying your taxes, the FTC has tips for you here. You can call the Taxpayer Advocate Service at 877-777-4778 for assistance.
