Do Not Call Registry Part I – Are You On the List?

We hear from numerous consumers who are upset about frequent telemarketing calls. When we ask if they are on the Do Not Call list, many of them say, “I think so.” There is an easy way to verify if your number is on the Do Not Call list.

First of all, there is a National Do Not Call Registry and a state Do Not Call list. To verify that your number is on the National Registry, you can call 1-888-382-1222, or check online at https://www.donotcall.gov/confirm/conf.aspx. To check online, you need to have an email address in order to complete the registration or verification process. The National Registry accepts cell phone numbers as well as personal landline numbers, but business to business calls and faxes are not covered.

Indiana maintains its own Do Not Call List. It is a good idea to be on the state list as well as the National Registry. To register for the Indiana Do Not Call list call 1.888.834.9969 or use the online registration form. To verify that your number is on the Indiana Do Not Call List, go to http://www.in.gov/attorneygeneral/2678.htm.

Kentucky and Illinois do not maintain their own lists, but they do enforce the rules of the National Do Not Call Registry. Information about the Kentucky Telemarketing No Call Law can be found at http://nocall.ky.gov/aboutlaw.aspx. Information about the Illinois Do Not Call Registry can be found at http://www.illinoisattorneygeneral.gov/donotcall/donotcall.htm.

Once you register your phone number(s), your registration does not expire. However, if your phone is disconnected and then reconnected, or you change your calling plan, or change the billing name on the telephone account, you may have to re-register.

If you live in a community such as a senior living center or university housing, you may have phone numbers that are hidden by a PBX (private branch exchange) system. If so, you may not be able to register by phone; instead, you’ll need to register on the National Do Not Call Registry website at www.donotcall.gov.

Unfortunately, having your phone number on the Registry will not stop all telemarketing calls. Next week, we will examine the kind of telemarketing calls that are exempt from the Telemarketing Do Not Call Law.
