You have probably heard by now about a Facebook statement according to which 50 million people had their Facebook “likes” harvested by a third party. Your BBB® would like you to know that there is a way to stop people from snooping around your online preferences and the secret lies in your Facebook privacy settings, so you may want to try this:
- Stop third-party data collection. Every single app that you have linked to your Facebook account is also collecting data, so you may want to go to the Apps section in your Facebook Settings menu. To stop all of this, you can turn off the Facebook Platform by going to Settings, select Apps, click on the Apps box, Websites, and Plugins. This means that after shutting off Facebook Platform you will no longer be able to log into your unlinked apps using Facebook, so you may want to change all your passwords before doing that.
- Limit the way Facebook tracks your activity on other websites. There are many websites that still send information to Facebook thanks to a series of embedded codes that feed into your cookies. To stop all of this from happening you can install a tracker blocker extension also known as an ad blocker. It only takes a few seconds to install.
- Turn off location services. Facebook gathers information regarding your location by default. You may not have chosen for this to happen, so in order to disable this feature, on an iPhone go to Settings > Privacy > Location Services > Facebook and select the Never option. For Android go to Settings > Apps & Notifications > App Permissions > Location Permissions > Facebook and move the slide bar to the Off position.
- Make yourself harder to find! Go to the “Who can look me up?” section of Facebook Privacy Settings and choose the audience that you want your profile to be visible to. Also, control who can see your posts, so make sure to only share them with your friends. To stop random posts from showing up on your timeline, head over to Timeline Review and enable it, so that you can review all posts and only publish the ones that you want.
