Your BBB is getting calls from Indiana citizens who are receiving a letter from the Indiana Department of Revenue which asks for persons to submit their social security number and their 2013 state refund amount. If you have received a letter from the Indiana Department of Revenue, you must complete an Identity Confirmation Quiz before your refund will be processed. The link labeled “Take the Quiz” directs you to https://stopidtheft.dor.in.gov/.
You will be asked two questions: Primary Social Security Number or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number, and Indiana Refund Dollar Amount. After clicking submit, you will be given a few multiple choice questions that supposedly only you would know such as your monthly car payment. The quiz must be completed in 3 minutes and you are given up to 3 times to answer these questions correctly.
People without internet access, or having difficulty completing the quiz should call the dedicated Indiana Department of Revenue number of 317-233-1642.
This project is a partnership between the Indiana Department of Revenue and Lexis Nexus.
A representative with DOR told me she did not know what criteria is being used in determining which people are receiving these letters, but that processing of their refund would not continue until the “quiz” is completed.
Another great phone resource for anything Indiana to store for future use is the Indiana State Information Line at (800-INState) 800-457-8283.
