Our colleagues from the Birmingham BBB brought a scheme in which persons are impersonating officials of the National Do Not Call List or the Federal Trade Commission, FTC.
The schemers are looking to obtain personal information such as social security numbers and the like. They may be using the ploy of simply wanting to verify information on file, offering to register you for the do not call list, or re-register your number.
Here’s the deal, no one from the FTC or the National Do Not Call Registry will ever call you to verify information.
In Indiana, we have a separate do not call list which is administered by the Attorney General’s office. If you’re an Indiana resident, and you’re phone number isn’t registered, you may do so by calling from the phone you wish to register. The toll-free number is (888) 834-9969. You may also register your phone number online at http://www.in.gov/attorneygeneral/2445.htm. To register your number on the National Do Not Call List, call 888 382-1222 from the phone you wish to register or you may visit www.donotcall.gov.
According to the Indiana Attorney General’s office, there have been no reports of such calls to Indiana residents. If you should happen to receive such calls:
1. If you have caller ID, and the number is displayed, contact the FTC at (877) 382-4357. If you are an Indiana resident and you receive such a call, call the Attorney General’s office at (800) 382-5516.
2. In any event if you receive such a call, simply hang up.
