You’ve heard about sweepstakes scams.

You’ve read about government grant scams.

You’re on the lookout for scam attempts on your social media pages.

And then there are the unfortunate charity-related scams.

How about, then, we tell you about a fraudulent act that combined all four: a woman was sent a message via Facebook telling her about a government grant opportunity. All she had to do was wire transfer two thousand dollars to a charity in Massachusetts.

You can read the full story here.  But we’d also like to remind our readers that there are a few lessons here, as well:

  • you have to apply for a grant and won’t have to pay upfront fees to get one;

  • you should never wire transfer money to an unknown source (even if it’s a charity);

  • check your privacy settings on social media pages;

  • and stop, ask questions, and verify!
