Your BBB® would like to remind everyone that the new deadline to get your money from the FTC settlement with Western Union is May 31, 2018. This means that if you sent money to a person who turned out to be a scammer via Western Union between January 1, 2004 and January 19, 2017, you are entitled to a sum of money.
However, the FTC would like to share a few tips regarding this issue, to make sure everyone knows how to proceed and how to avoid scammers in the process:
- Don’t pay anyone to file your claim for you! Just file your own claim and if someone says you need to pay them a fee before receiving the money, please know that it’s a scam!
- File your claim as soon as you can! Filing your claim is easy, just go to gov/WU, fill out the form, providing all the information and documents that you have, and that’s all.
- Mail in your claim if you need to. If you know someone who might be entitled to settlement money but doesn’t have access to the internet, you can download a copy of the form here, ask them to fill it out and mail it to this address: United States v. The Western Union Company, PO Box 404027, Louisville, KY 40233-4027.
- No one can get your refund to you faster! If someone asks you for money in exchange for helping your refund get to you faster, please know that it’s a scam! Your refund will get to you at the same pace no matter who you pay or don’t pay, so save your money!
