The Important Role of the BBB

Your Better Business Bureau (BBB) is a non-profit organization that encourages businesses to act ethically in the marketplace and provides information about businesses to consumers to help consumers make an informed decision about who they choose to do business with. Part of this goal includes offering a dispute resolution process between consumers and businesses.

When consumers feel they are experiencing a marketplace problem with a business they can file a complaint with the BBB. Many government agencies at both the state and federal level also offer complaint processes for consumers. Unfortunately many state and federal agencies require either a minimum dollar amount or a minimum number of complaints before they can take action. Depending on the agency, the issue may have to involve tens of thousands of dollars or a few hundred complaints before action can be taken. The court system is an option for consumers but this involves court fees and can be a lengthy process. Some courts are backlogged and the cost to the consumer may exceed the benefit even if the consumer litigates successfully.

There are other organizations that offer dispute resolution processes. Some remove complaints that they feel the business resolves meaning that consumers do not know how many complaints have actually been filed against the business. Some offer the chance for the business to respond but businesses can be reluctant to address issues from organizations they are not familiar with.

By offering a free process to consumers requiring no minimum dollar amount or complaint volume, your BBB plays an important role in dispute resolution. The BBB reflects all complaints processed against a business regardless of outcome and has been working with businesses to address issues for over a hundred years.

In addition to dispute resolution, your BBB also provides warnings and presentations to the community to make consumers aware of schemes and provide tips for consumers. This consumer education blog is part of the BBB’s effort to help informed consumers of marketplace tips and issues. This will be my final contribution to the blog and I would like to thank our readers for their support.
