This Week is National Small Business Week

Small Business OwnerSmall Business Week is being held this week May 4 – 8, 2015, and your BBB would like to recognize the many small businesses in our community that consumers depend on for providing goods and services.  Since 1963, the Small Business Administration (SBA) has been highlighting the importance of small businesses to our economy. The theme this year is “Dream Big, Start Small.”

During this week, the SBA announces the national winners of the competitive nomination and selection process in categories ranging from Exporter of the Year to Small Business Investment Company of the Year. The head of the U.S. Small Business Administration, Maria Contreras-Sweet, in her statement announcing the week’s award winners, said, “National Small Business Week is a chance to honor our nation’s 28 million small businesses and renew our commitment to fostering the entrepreneurial spirit that is central to the American experience.” The list of award winners is included in Contreras-Sweet’s statement.

Information on the Small Business Administration website says that more than half of Americans either own or work for a small business, and they create about two out of every three new jobs in the U.S. each year. Small businesses have often been called the “Backbone of our Economy.” Your BBB would like to remind you when you get ready to do your shopping, don’t forget about the many small businesses in your community.
