Welcome! - The Beacon

Welcome to BBBConsumerEducation.com! This blog is brought to you by the Tri-State Better Business Bureau headquartered in Evansville, Indiana. Here, we intend to engage in a more direct conversation with consumers, in the hope that our tips and advice may help you. We welcome your comments, suggestions and questions. I’m Mary Beth and I’ll be the primary author, but at times you may hear from others in the office. Our CEO, Cathy for instance. Possibly our Vice President of Operations, Tom. Maybe the Director of Communications and Public Relations, Mike. Or our Foundation Director, Alanna. We might even be able to convince the other Kathy, a Trade Practice Consultant, to contribute from time to time.

For the inaugural post, I thought it would be nice to tell you a little about the BBB, who we are and what we do. The first Better Business Bureau can be traced back to the court case initiated by the government against a number of companies, including the Coca-Cola Company. At the time advertising was completely out of control and wild claims were commonplace so the government decided to get involved. During the course of the 1906 trial, one of the lawyers remarked that no one believes advertising anyway. The legal charges were determined to be unfounded but Samuel Candler Dobbs, sales manager of Coca-Cola Company and later its president, took up the cause of truth in advertising. Through a series of federations and associations a consolidated system of Better Business Bureaus emerged and eventually they all merged under the umbrella of the national Council of Better Business Bureaus which is based in Arlington, VA. Our local BBB was formed in 1985 and currently serves an 18 county area, encompassing parts of Southern Indiana,Northern Kentucky and South Eastern Illinois.  History lesson over, I promise. Today, there are BBBs across the country. We handle consumer complaints, provide company reports and charity reviews, conduct advertising review and engage in consumer education projects. If there is anything we can do for you, feel free to contact us through comments, email (info at Evansville dot BBB dot org) or give us a call 812-473-0202 (toll free 800-359-0979). I hope you’ll come back and visit this site often. You might also be interested in subscribing to the site feed.
