Wellness Support Network Fined For Phony Diabetes Treatment and Prevention Claims

Wellness Support Network screen capIn a recent press release your BBB has learned that the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) won a $2.2 million judgment against Wellness Support Network, Inc. and its two principals, Robert Held and his daughter Robyn Held. They marketed nutritional supplements claiming they would treat and prevent diabetes. The federal court ruled that they violated Section 5 of the FTC Act. The funds recovered by the FTC will be used to reimburse consumers who purchased the products.

The FTC challenged claims for two sets of dietary supplements that Wellness Support Network marketed for diabetics. The Diabetic Pack contained three different products that the company claimed contained vitamins, minerals, and plant extracts that would treat diabetes. The Insulin Resistance Pack had the same three products as those in the Diabetic Pack, and the company claimed it would reduce insulin resistance and help prevent diabetes. Both sold on the company’s website www.realfoodnutrients.com for $76.70 for a 30-day supply.

The company described the products as “Completely Natural,” “Diabetes Breakthrough,” and “Insulin Resistance Breakthrough.” The company even claimed that the products were validated by “Nobel Prize-winning technology.” Claims that the Diabetic Pack and the Insulin Resistance Pack were proven to cause an average 31.9% drop in blood glucose levels were found to be false or not supported by scientific evidence.

Jessica Rich, Director of the FTC’s Bureau of Consumer Protection, stated “Giving false hope to those who struggle with a serious illness is disgraceful, and the FTC is determined to ensure that deceptive marketers face the consequences.”

The FTC’s case against Wellness Support Network Inc. is part of an ongoing initiative by the FTC to combat these types of deceptive health product advertising.
