What the BBB can do for you

After the previous post about what we don’t do, I thought it might be nice to tell you what the BBB can do for you. In addition to providing consumer education services (like this blog, PSAs and speeches), we handle complaints against members and non-members involving marketplace activities, including, but not limited to, the following:

– Misleading advertising
– Improper selling practices
– Non-delivery of goods or services
– Misrepresentation
– Un-honored guarantees or warranty
– Unsatisfactory service
– Credit/billing problems
– Contracts not fulfilled
– Et cetera

All complaints are handled by the Better Business Bureau where the company is headquartered.

In order for us to process a complaint, it must meet the following criteria:

¢ The complaint includes the complainant’s name and postal address
¢ The complaint includes the company’s name and provides sufficient information to determine the company’s location. A mail address or phone number (except for toll-free numbers) will ordinarily be sufficient
¢ The complaint is from a customer, or the customer’s authorized representative, of the company complained about. Authorized representatives include lawyers and guardians or caretakers who are filing on behalf of minor children, the elderly, or persons with disabilities
¢ The complaint alleges a problem experienced with the services or products that the company provided or agreed to provide
¢ The complaint is not in litigation and has not been resolved by a previous court action, arbitration, or settlement between the parties
¢ The complaint contains no abusive language

We also have special dispute resolution programs for cell phone complaints and new car issues. As always, if you have questions about a specific issue let us or your local bureau know and we’ll do our best to satisfy your concerns.
