We are a little over a month away from “Tax Day.” If you haven’t filed your taxes yet, your BBB® has the following information on how you might be able to do it for free.
According to the IRS, 70% of taxpayers qualify to file their taxes for free. That’s over 100 million people! So how can you file free? Through an IRS program called Free File.
If your adjusted gross income for 2015 was $62,000 or less, you will find one or more free software options through Free File at IRS.gov. Each company sets its own eligibility criteria, generally based on income, age, state residency, eligibility for the Earned Income Tax Credit and military status. Once at the company’s website, review their information to make sure it meets your needs. If you feel you need help deciding which software to use, the IRS has a helpful tool at Help Me Find Free File Software.
Keep in mind, this program is only for federal tax returns. If you want to prepare your state tax form, some of the companies will charge a fee, and some may not support a particular tax form you need to file. Also know that you must begin your free file return on the IRS website at https://www.irs.gov/uac/Free-File:-Do-Your-Federal-Taxes-for-Free. If you go directly to the private sector company’s website, you may be charged.
If your AGI is over $62,000, you are eligible to use the Free File Fillable Forms, but you have to prepare your own tax return. This option does not offer state tax returns and performs only basic calculations. To see what forms are available to use in the Free File Fillable Forms program, go to http://www.irs.gov/uac/List-of-Available-Free-File-Fillable-Forms.
