Hello, consumers, we have some Halloween tips for you! Your BBB® knows that everyone is eager to welcome trick or treaters and put on fun costumes, but would also like to remind everyone that scammers sometimes try to take advantage of your enthusiasm. Here are a few smart tips from your BBB to prepare you for scary experiences this Halloween:
Haunted theme events
If you and your friends plan on attending this type of event, there are a few things to keep in mind first: be very wary of an event that only advertises online or on social media. If there’s no way to contact the organizers, that’s another red flag! Just to be sure, contact the venue in advance and ask for more information. The BBB would also like to warn area residents of “No refund” policies that apply even when the organizers are the ones to cancel the event!
Popup Halloween stores
These stores can really come in handy and sometimes provide just what you need, but their temporary nature can leave consumers confused. If you’re planning on shopping at a seasonal shop, follow these steps:
- Ask about the return policy – Will the store be open after the season is over? How many days do I have to return my item? What do I need to bring with me when returning my product?
- Use a credit card instead of cash or a debit card – remember to save your receipt. If something happens and you need help, your credit card company can lend a helping hand.
- Write down the contact information – ask if the vendor/store has a website with contact information that you can use in case you need to reach them.
- Check the shop’s review on bbb.org! Find out more about the store, their rating and customer complaints before making a purchase!
If you’ve decided to order your candy, costumes, and decorations online, check to see if the e-store is secure or not. Make sure the URL starts with “https ://”, not just “http :/”. That S stands for secure. Also, read the fine prints, check the return policy, shipping fees and times and if you need help, don’t forget to call us!
This Halloween, stay safe, stay informed!
